reflection on oral presentation

This is the first group presentation I had in university. What a life I had!

I think overall, our team worked well together.

The content of the presentation is well-organised and cohesive. The power point was professional looking with minimum amount of words. However, I was wondering whether a bit more key words would help the audience to grasp the main points. From the Q&A session, I had the feeling that my classmates did not quite get the focus of the project very precisely. Of course, I have to say that it is very easy to get focused about the focus. We deviated from the focus now and then throughout the project as well. However, in order to make the proposed solution relevant and feasible, we have to define the problem we want to address in this way.

The delivery of the whole presentation was well received. Thanks to all the rehearsals and hard work our members put in. I did not perform very well. I was kind of nervous and searching through my mind for the next line at times. Thanks Vanessa for the affirmative eye contact :) Hence I think I should still practice more next time.

Questions during Q&A were answered well. I answered too many of them though, my bad. In addition, we should also rehearse about possible questions as well.
It was a rewarding experience working together with all of you :)

  1. Hi Susan,

I noticed that you fumbled a little during your presentation and were looking at the computer screen half of the time, which leads to insufficient eye contact. It seems to me that you were trying to recall what you need to say next. Perhaps more practice would have helped in this.

You appear to be a little monotone as well. Conscious effort would have made you sound more enthusiastic. This is something you might want to take note of in the future.

All in all, your group's presentation was persuasive and relatively smooth. Great job!

  2. Hi Susan! :)

I think you did a good job during the presentation. And i agree, there were several modifications to the focus of our project, sometimes even i myself got a bit lost. But thankfully the final outcome was much more clearly defined and the points were coherent. Thanks to the script on googledoc! :D

And getting from Science to Engineer faculty for all the group meetings and rehearsals isn't easy. Thanks for taking the effort to travel here to meet us :D

Thanks for the constructive comment! I did not realise that I was looking at the screen. I thought there was nothing to look at. So I will still to tempted to look at the screen even if there were nothing.

    Cynthia:

Thank you so much! For everything.

  4. Hey Susan,

Well, you certainly are difficult to assess, because I couldn't make up one bit what you were saying!!!

Your elocution was totally off the mark, which I know you can't help becauase of the Chinese accent of yours. But I'm sure with more speech practice you will improve.

Because I couldn't understand the words you were saying, I couldn't assess if you were confidence or persuasive enough with what you were saying, I couldn't assess if you were passionate enough for your topic too, though you did smile here and there, but it isn't enough if I can't understand what you were saying.

By mid-way, my attention was drifting, and I started to look at your nice flowery collar T-shirt, I started to wonder why your eyes are so cute and your smile so warming. Now that is terrible if your audience is thinking of you rather than thinking of the presentation and what you are trying to saying.

But don't worry, Susan, you are in this position for a reason, to become better, to make improvements, nothing else!!!

    Cheers to Susan!

  7. Hi Susan!

Congratulations on getting through the presentation, sorry about all the questions during Q&A, but I think you guys handled it very well! I didn't think you answered too many of them, don't worry. Usually you were just adding on to the points the others gave.

I, too, noticed that you seemed to be glancing down a lot, maybe searching for hidden notes? I also tend to look down when I think so I guess it's just a bad habit we have to overcome.

I must say that you had a very confident start to your speech and that was what grabbed my attention, so I applaud you for that! Keep up the good work.

  8. Hi Mark,

Thanks for taking the time and effort to try to assess everyone.

I am atually shocked at your comment that you cannot understand me. And honestly, I cannot beileve that is true. You did not appear to have difficulty understanding me during class though we barely talked.

I do need more speech practice. I agree with you on that.

Lastly, thanks for your compliments, though I am not sure whether you mistook Cynthia to be me. She is the one wearing the flowery collar blouse, with cute eyes and warming smiles.

By the way, I just want to say that I appreciate the energy you spent on assessing us. If you do value people's appreciation, maybe you can try to make your comments more "acceptable". For example, shorten them, use a less authoritative tone and avoid saying things that you yourself would not wish to hear. Some of the comment you left on our classmates' blog really will make people think ill of you. (I guess I was kind of lucky to have the accent that disabled you from assessing me.)

    Hi VK!

Please don't apologize for your question. It revealed the fact that we weren't absolutely clear in presenting the ideas.
There was really nothing to look at on the screen. When I reviewed the clip again, I was wondering what on earth am I looking at the screen for, too.

    Thanks for commenting :)

  9. Hey Susan,

You are the one with cute eyes and warming smiles! Haha! I watched you on computer screen that was blur, and your dress looked flowery, just like Cynthia's! Haha!

I really didn't understand you, Susan, but I suspect it was the sound quality was bad, and together with your accent, made it worst, and I couldn't understand what you were saying. I had to replay. But in class I understood you clearly. Haha!

Also don't worry Susan, I'm always nice to everybody when I comment, when did I become 'not nice'? Maybe you can show me which comment that I make on our classmate's blog that is bad? Which one? Then I can learn not to do that. Haha!

    Cheers to Susan!
